DAY 4 — LIFE UNDER THE SUN
Scripture
Ecclesiastes 12:13–14
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments.”
Devotional
Ecclesiastes repeatedly uses a fascinating phrase:
“Under the sun.”
The sermon described this as looking at human existence only from the perspective of this world—life without considering God.
And if that's all there is, Solomon's frustration makes sense.
People come and go.
Possessions disappear.
Accomplishments are forgotten.
Eventually someone else owns everything we spent our lives accumulating.
Even wisdom cannot prevent death.
If all we have is life under the sun, what ultimately lasts?
But after twelve chapters of wrestling, Ecclesiastes reaches its conclusion:
Fear God.
Suddenly there is something beyond the sun.
Someone eternal.
Someone who existed before us and will remain after us.
Someone who gives meaning to the temporary things we're experiencing now.
That's why faith doesn't simply give us another activity to add to our lives.
It changes how we understand all of life.
Our work matters differently.
Our relationships matter differently.
Our suffering looks different.
Our possessions occupy a different place.
Our decisions have a different purpose.
Because we're no longer trying to manufacture meaning from the temporary things around us.
We're receiving meaning from the eternal God who is above them.
Reflect
Where are you currently living as though everything depends on you?
How does God's presence change the way you view that situation?
If God were truly at the center of your life today, what would you approach differently?
Prayer
God, I don't want to live as though this world is all there is. Lift my eyes above the temporary things around me. Help me live today with an awareness of Your presence, Your authority and Your purposes. Amen.
Today's Step
When you feel pressure today, stop and ask:
“How would I approach this differently if I really believed God was present with me?”
Then respond accordingly.
