Day 3: Where Is the Lamb?
Day 3: Where Is the Lamb?
Read: Genesis 22:6–14
Isaac carries the wood up the mountain. Abraham carries the fire and the knife.
Then Isaac asks the question:
“The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice?”
There it is. The question at the center of the story.
Abraham answers, “God himself will provide the lamb for the sacrifice, my son.”
Abraham thinks he is answering Isaac, but he is saying more than he knows.
When they arrive, Abraham builds the altar. He binds Isaac. He raises the knife.
Then God stops him.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy.”
Not this son.
Not this sacrifice.
Not today.
Then Abraham sees a ram caught in a thicket.
A substitute.
A sacrifice in the place of the son.
The son lives because the substitute dies.
This is where the name comes from. Abraham names the place, “The LORD Will Provide.” Yahweh Jireh.
Notice what God provided. God did not provide Abraham with an explanation. He did not provide Abraham with a feeling. He did not provide Abraham with an easier story.
God provided a substitute.
That matters because the Bible is slowly teaching us what we need most. We do not merely need advice. We do not merely need encouragement. We do not merely need a second chance.
We need a substitute.
We need someone to stand in our place. We need someone to do for us what we could never do for ourselves.
Genesis 22 is not the end of that story. It is a signpost pointing forward.
God Himself will provide the Lamb.
Reflect:
Are you asking God only for explanations, or are you learning to trust His provision even when you do not understand?
Pray:
Lord, thank You that You provide what I need most, even when I cannot see it yet. Teach me to trust Your heart when I do not understand Your hand. Amen.
