Day 2: Peace Before the Battle Is Over

Day 2: Peace Before the Battle Is Over
Read: Judges 6:17-24
Slow Down

When Gideon realizes he has encountered God, he panics.
“Oh, Sovereign LORD, I’m doomed! I have seen You face to face!”
Gideon had been afraid of Midian. But suddenly a deeper fear rises to the surface: Can I stand before God and live? Can I be fully seen and not be rejected?
God answers with the words his soul needs: “Peace. Do not be afraid.”
Then Gideon builds an altar and names it Yahweh Shalom, the LORD is Peace.
Notice when he says this. Not after Midian is defeated. Not after the army is gathered. Not after he feels courageous. Gideon names God “Peace” while the enemy is still out there.
This is one of the deepest gifts of God. He can give peace before the battle is over.
That does not mean the diagnosis is small, grief disappears, the child is home, the conflict is healed, or the future is clear. It means God Himself has come near.
Before Gideon needed peace from Midian, he needed peace with God. So do we.
We often ask God first to change what is around us. And He can. He heals, provides, restores, breaks chains, and opens doors.
But beneath every request for peace from our circumstances is a deeper longing: Is God with me? Is God for me? Can I bring Him everything broken in me and still be met with mercy?
In Jesus, the answer is yes. You do not have to hide from God. You do not have to pretend to be stronger than you are. The God who met Gideon in fear still meets His people in fear.
Reflect
• What situation are you waiting to resolve before you believe peace is possible?
• What fear rises when you imagine being fully seen by God?
• Where do you need peace with God before peace from your circumstances?
Pray
Yahweh Shalom, I often want You to fix everything around me before I trust You within me. Meet me with mercy. Let Your presence become deeper than my need for control. Amen.
Practice
When tension rises today, breathe slowly and pray: “God, You are with me before this is resolved.”
