Good Seed Garden Community Update

Dear Good Seed Gardeners—
We have so enjoyed having you as our neighbors, working what was once a weedy patch of land into a beautiful, productive garden. Thank you!
When we were approached with the proposal to make this unused portion of our property into a community garden, our leadership unanimously supported it. The church provided several thousand dollars in start-up funds to build the fence, install the irrigation system and make other improvements. Many members of the church volunteered their time and talents to design and build this beautiful space to offer our Carbondale neighbors.
In 2012, The Orchard agreed that this land would be used for gardening unless we needed the space for other purposes. The original land use agreement included six sites for affordable housing, either for church staff or other community members. As we have grown and as affordable housing has become more scarce, we have made the difficult decision to build the first house on the southwest corner of land now occupied by the Good Seed Garden.
What does this mean for you and the future of the garden?
At this time, we don’t have all the answers, but here is what we anticipate will probably happen during the next year:
There are more details to work out, and the timing is not final. Depending on funding, the project could be delayed beyond what we have outlined.

Hemos disfrutado mucho tenerlos como vecinos, trabajando lo que antes era un terreno lleno de maleza para convertirlo en un jardín hermoso y productivo. ¡Gracias!
Cuando se nos presentó la propuesta de convertir esta parte no utilizada de nuestra propiedad en un jardín comunitario, nuestro liderazgo la apoyó de manera unánime. What does this mean for you and the future of the garden?
At this time, we don’t have all the answers, but here is what we anticipate will probably happen during the next year:
- In the next few weeks, a drilling truck will take soil samples on Level A. Later, we may have to drill at the four corners of the fenced-in area, but hope to do this without disturbing plots (though fencing might have to be temporarily removed).
- In October or November, if all approvals are received by the town, we would then install utilities for all six plots and regrade the entire garden. Regrading would probably remove all plots.
- In early 2027, we would construct the first house on the southwest corner of what is now the garden. This would most likely be a manufactured home.
- We are still determining if the entire fence would need to be removed during regrading, or whether a portion of the fence could remain until the rest of the housing is built at a later time. If enough of the fence can remain, The Orchard leadership is considering whether the timeframe for other housing would be such that gardeners could re-assemble their plots and continue until more houses need to be constructed.
There are more details to work out, and the timing is not final. Depending on funding, the project could be delayed beyond what we have outlined.

Do you want to grow your own veggies and need a garden plot?
Then Good Seed Community Garden is for you!
The Good Seed Community Garden is located inside the town of Carbondale on The Orchard property at 110 Snowmass Dr, Carbondale, CO 81623. The garden is open to everyone and will provide a place where community members can gather to enjoy gardening together. As part of signing the gardening agreement, gardeners will be asked to contribute 10% of produce to those in need.

Registration for Good Seed Garden plots is now online! You will be able to see which plots are available before you register and pay with credit/debit card or PayPal. This system will also help us communicate with you better during the growing season.
Plots will be available until all are taken. Updates and news will be posted onthe garden’s Facebook page.
