Day 1: The God Who Meets You in the Winepress
Day 1: What Banner Is Over My Life?
SCRIPTURE READING: Exodus 17:15
“Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The LORD Is My Banner.”
DEVOTIONAL REFLECTION
There is something powerful about a banner.
A banner tells people where to look, where to gather, who they belong to, and what has not fallen.
When Moses built an altar after Israel’s victory over Amalek, he did not name it after Joshua’s courage, Moses’ leadership, Israel’s strength, or their battle strategy.
He named it Yahweh Nissi: The LORD is my banner.
That name was a confession.
It was Israel saying, “We did not save ourselves.”
It was Israel saying, “Our strength was not enough.”
It was Israel saying, “The LORD is the One over us, before us, among us, and worthy of the glory.”
The question for us is not whether we have a banner.
We do.
Every person rallies around something.
Every person looks somewhere for identity, confidence, direction, and hope.
For some, the banner is success.
For others, it is control, comfort, approval, politics, family, or self.
But Yahweh Nissi asks a deeper question.
What banner is actually over my life?
Not what banner do I admire.
Not what banner do I claim on Sunday.
What banner am I living under?
A false banner will always overpromise and underdeliver.
It may give a moment of confidence, but it cannot give salvation.
Only the LORD can be the banner over your life.
Only He can define you without crushing you, lead you without using you, gather you without manipulating you, and save you completely.
Today, begin with honesty.
Do not rush to the “right” answer.
Let God lovingly reveal what has actually been shaping your life.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
• What do I run to first when life feels confusing or frightening?
• What do I protect most fiercely when I feel threatened?
• What would devastate me if I lost it?
• Where does my calendar reveal devotion?
• Where does my money reveal trust?
• What banner has been shaping me more than I realized?
PRAYER
Lord, reveal the banner over my life. Show me where I have trusted lesser things to define me, lead me, or save me. I do not want to simply admire You. I want to live under You. Be my banner today. Amen.
TODAY’S PRACTICE
Write this sentence somewhere visible: “The LORD is my banner.” Then ask God throughout the day, “What would change right now if I truly lived under Your banner?”
