Day 5: Jesus Is Yahweh Nissi in the Flesh

Day 5: Jesus Is Yahweh Nissi in the Flesh
SCRIPTURE READING: John 12:32

“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
DEVOTIONAL REFLECTION
Exodus 17 is not the end of the banner story.
It is the beginning of a thread.
God’s people learned that Yahweh was their banner.
But later, the prophets spoke of a coming day when a banner would be raised not only for one people, but for the nations.
Isaiah said the root of Jesse would stand as a signal for the peoples, and the nations would seek Him.
That means the banner would not ultimately be fabric.
The banner would be a person.
A Son of David.
A Messiah.
A King.
And His name is Jesus.
Jesus is Yahweh Nissi in the flesh.
He is the LORD our banner embodied.
He is the One lifted up for the world to see.
At the cross, Jesus did not simply show us what banner to live under.
He became the banner that saves us.
He was lifted up in suffering.
Lifted up in sacrifice.
Lifted up in love.
Lifted up so sinners could be forgiven.
Lifted up so enemies could become family.
Lifted up so the guilty could be cleansed.
Lifted up so the weary could be gathered.
Lifted up so the divided could be made one.
Jesus is not one banner among many.
Jesus is the highest banner.
He is not asking to be included in your life.
He is calling you to come under His life.
He is not asking to become part of your agenda.
He is calling you into His kingdom.
And this is good news.
Jesus is not merely an example for people who need to try harder.
He is the Savior for people who have lived under the wrong banners.
He died for all the ways we have trusted false things.
He forgives us.
He gathers us.
He reclaims us.
He gives us a new name, a new people, a new purpose, and a new banner.
So today, look to Jesus.
If you are not sure what you believe, start there.
Look at the One who was lifted up for you.
Look at the One who does not exploit the weak, crush sinners, or wait for you to clean yourself up before He loves you.
Look at the One who went to the cross, rose from the dead, and says, “Come to Me.”
If you already follow Jesus, look again.
Lower the false banner.
Say yes where He sends you.
Put the ordinary parts of your life under His authority.
The banner over you is not fear.
The banner over you is not shame.
The banner over you is not self.
The banner over you is not death.
The banner over you is Jesus.
Yahweh Nissi.
The LORD is my banner.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
• Where do I need to look to Jesus again?
• What false banner do I need to lower?
• What part of my ordinary life needs to come under His authority?
• How does the cross show me both the seriousness of my sin and the depth of His love?
• What would it look like to live today as someone gathered, forgiven, and sent by Jesus?
PRAYER
Jesus, You are the banner lifted up for me. You are the Savior who forgives me. You are the King who gathers me. You are the Lord who sends me. I lower every false banner before You. Be the banner over my life today and every day. Amen.
TODAY’S PRACTICE
Pray this slowly three times: “Jesus, You are my banner.” Then name one specific area beneath that prayer: my money, my calendar, my words, my family, my future, my fear, my pain, or my yes. End by saying, “The LORD is my banner.”
