Day 3 — Stop Trying to Pay God Back
Day 3 — Stop Trying to Pay God Back
Read: Luke 15:18–22; Ephesians 2:4–9
The son planned his speech: “I have sinned. I am no longer worthy. Make me like one of your servants.” But before he could finish, the father told the servants, “Quick! Bring the best robe.” Ephesians says that God, being rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ by grace. We are saved by grace through faith, not by works.
The prodigal’s best plan was still too small. He thought the highest hope available was servant status. He thought he could come near, work hard, and maybe slowly repay the debt. That is penance. It is the instinct of the human heart to turn grace into wages.
Believers do this all the time. We may not say it out loud, but we think it. “I know God forgives me, but I should probably prove I’m serious.” “I need to do better for a while before I pray with confidence.” “I need to get my act together before I can really feel close to God again.”
But the Father interrupts the servant speech. Why? Because servants work for a place in the house. Sons and daughters receive one. Grace is not God making a payment plan with you. Grace is God receiving you because Jesus already paid.
Reflect:
Father, forgive me for trying to earn what You freely give. Teach me to stop performing for love and start receiving it. Thank You that Jesus has already done what I never could. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reflect:
- Where am I still trying to earn what Jesus already purchased?
- What is my version of a “pigpen penance plan”?
- How would I pray differently today if I really believed I do not need to pay God back?
Father, forgive me for trying to earn what You freely give. Teach me to stop performing for love and start receiving it. Thank You that Jesus has already done what I never could. In Jesus’ name, amen.
